Commentaries

Find here Unashamed Workman’s recommended commentaries for the New Testament. The list has been collated partly on the basis of commentaries I have used myself and partly on the recommendations of others. The current list is mainly academic level works. I hope, however, to add others which are more application focused.

  1. Thanks. This is a great list.

I put together a similar post with my favorite commentaries on each NT book here:

  2. great list. i don’t think it is on the web, and you probably know about it, but Fee and Stuarts list in the appendix to “How to Read the Bible for all its Worth” has been a guide to me. make sure you use the updated 3rd ed. it is different

  3. I will be using the O’Brien commentary for Philippians in my next Greek class. I have read through part of it and it is excellent.

  4. I’m working through Luke and have to say that the best commentary I have come across is that by Darrell Bock in the BECNT Series. Both volumes are exceptionally insightful and helpful.

  5. Housekeeping note: The “Desiring God” link is not working

  6. Please check out my website (www.book-academy.co.uk) for older commentaries recommended by the “Prince of Preachers” viz. Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Enjoy!

  7. R.T. France’s work on Matthew in the NICNT series is excellent as well. He is a great commentary writer. He goes in depth but writes in a way you can sit and read his commentaries like a good novel!

  8. I lock Bock pretty well but dislike his views on the Q gospel theory. Otherwise he is a very insightful scholar.

  9. I would have to suggest that you add R.T. France’s Matthew Commentary in the NICNT series–I have found it to be amazingly enlightening and well composed (being amazingly easy to read while not lacking in scholarship either).
