Ezra’s Expository Model

May 5, 2009

“This is, in my estimation, the essence of expository preaching. The goal is to have the Holy Spirit use the text of the Scriptures He breathed out in order to shape and control the sermon. It is not stringing together thematic verses orphaned from their context; it is letting the Holy Spirit speak today as He spoke the words originally. He didn’t breathe forth the Scriptures in a topical index but in running narratives, carefully reasoned epistles and other literary forms that are given to us as whole documents, not fragments of thoughts.”

(John Kitchen, Revival in the Rublle, p 167:  commenting on Ezra and the Levite’s reading and explanation of Scripture, found in Nehemiah 8 )
