Mike Bullmore on OT Preaching
August 21, 2010The question he answers, over at Gospel Coalition:
Why don’t more people think of love when they read about God in the Old Testament?
What are the primary challenges for preaching expository messages from the Old Testament?
What resources, disciplines, or teachers have made you a better preacher of the Old Testament?
Thanks – good points raised here. Ed Clowney has been a great help in fixing the OT text within a biblical-theological framework, thus avoiding the twin extremes of :
1. Simply drawing moral lessons from OT texts
2.Looking for typology in every OT text.
However, best of all, I think Dale Ralph Davis has been of enormous help in reminding us that we equally do not need to feel locked into preaching the OT text from a biblical-theological perspective – he liberates us, and inspires us to preach OT texts – especially OT narative. His book “The Word Became Fresh” is a breath of fresh air. My favourite book on preaching the OT.
